Kodanashvili and Savitski Perform Rachmaninoff Works for Two Pianos

The Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at IU South Bend welcomes back to the stage two exceptional alumni members of the Toradze Piano Studio. Vakhtang Kodanashvili and Edisher Savitski will perform Rachmaninoff piano works for two pianos at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Campus Auditorium of Northside Hall on the campus of IU South Bend.  This duo will go on to present this concert at the Rachmaninoff Festival at the La Scala Theater in Milan, Italy this March.

The program of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s two pianos works will include Russian Rhapsody; Suite No. 1 (Fantaisie-Tableaux), Op. 5; Suite No. 2, Op. 17; and Symphonic Dances, Op. 45. The Rachmaninoff Festival is supported by the Rachmaninoff Foundation.  The festival celebrates the 140th anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s birth and commemorates the 70th anniversary of his death.

Kodanashvili made his New York City debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in 2001 as the result of his victory at The World Piano Competition in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the prize winner of several international competitions: The Hellam Young Artist Competition in Springfield, Mo.; The Nena Wideman Piano Competition in Shreveport, La.; The Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition in Radford, Va.; 8th International Piano Competition “Spanish Composers” in Las Rozas, Spain; and The 20th New Orleans International Piano Competition, Louisiana.  Kodanashvili joined the Toradze Piano Studio at IU South Bend in 1995 where he toured the world with the studio and earned his bachelor and master of music degrees in piano performance.  He went on to earn his doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance at the Michigan State University College of Music.

Savitski has appeared as a soloist with the Kirov Orchestra of Mariinsky Theatre, Pacific Symphony, and Morocco Philharmonic Orchestra, among others, and has performed at the most prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Zankel Hall and Weill Hall, New York City; Wigmore Hall, London; and Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg, Russia. Savitski is the first prizewinner of the Third International Piano-E-Competition in 2006 and the Hilton Head International Piano Competition in 2001, and took top prizes at the First International Piano-E-Competition and the William S. Byrd International Piano Competition. In 1998, Savitski joined the renowned Toradze Piano Studio at IU South Bend where he has been awarded with a Performers Certificate and currently serves as faculty. He is currently pursuing a doctor of musical arts degree in performance at Michigan State University.
